Every Friday, I feature artwork from a classic of science fiction cinema. This week's "Flashback Friday" post is on Star Wars Episode VI: Return of the Jedi (1983). Stian Dahlslett is a professional concept illustrator who's worked on films like Star Wars: Episode III - Revenge of the Sith (2005) and Max Manus: Man of War (2008)

Recently the official Star Wars site posted an article called "Mon Mothma, Rebel Leader: From Concept to Screen" that covered the design of the Rebel leader Mon Mothma played by Caroline Blakiston. The character appeared in Star Wars Episode VI: Return of the Jedi, Star Wars: Episode III Revenge of the Sith and Star Wars: The Clone Wars.

Nilo Rodis-Jamero is a professional concept artist who's worked on classic Hollywood movies like Star Wars: Episode V - The Empire Strikes Back (1980), Raiders of the Lost Ark (1981) and Alice in Wonderland (2010). Stian Dahlslett

Mon Mothma was created for the 1983 film Star Wars: Episode VI Return of the Jedi and first appeared in the scripts was in the revised rough draft from June 12, 1981. She was  to  make an inspirational speech in a war room of a Rebel frigate while "a pale blue non-human creature" named Ackbar would give the strategy briefing. A second draft from September 21, 1981, included Mothma saying that the Emperor himself is onboard the Death Star.

The script described her as a "stern, but beautiful woman in her fifties." Rodis-Jamero designed her outfit to be "simple and pure" like Princess Leia's. Costume designers from the film visited Blakiston in her Manchester hotel for fittings. While her character was endearing and powerful she only appeard for "twenty-six and a half seconds" as she would later say.

When the character was planned to return for Revenge of the Sith she was recast with Genevieve O’Reilly and a new costume was designed by Stian Dahlslett.

Official Star Wars Episode VI: Return of the Jedi Synopsis:
In the epic conclusion of the saga, the Empire prepares to crush the Rebellion with a more powerful Death Star while the Rebel fleet mounts a massive attack on the space station. Luke Skywalker confronts his father Darth Vader in a final climactic duel before the evil Emperor. In the last second, Vader makes a momentous choice: he destroys the Emperor and saves his son. The Empire is finally defeated, the Sith are destroyed, and Anakin Skywalker is thus redeemed. At long last, freedom is restored to the galaxy.
The film is set three years after Star Wars Episode IV: A New Hope. The Galactic Empire, under the leadership of the villainous Darth Vader, is in pursuit of Luke Skywalker and the rest of the Rebel Alliance. While Vader chases a small band of Luke's friends—Han Solo, Princess Leia Organa, and others—across the galaxy, Luke studies the Force under Jedi Master Yoda. But when Vader captures Luke's friends, Luke must decide whether to complete his training and become a full Jedi Knight or to confront Vader and save his comrades.
