In 2011, author Daniel H. Wilson wrote a thriller novel about a world where robots are everywhere and an artificial intelligence program takes on the appearance of a human boy and starts a robot uprising that could destroy the human race. The book focuses on the scientist that created the A.I. and his attempts to stop it. Spielberg was so excited about the novel that, like Jurassic Park, he began working on the movie adaptation as it was being written. Spielberg was to start shooting in January, 2012 with a planned release date of 2013. But in 2013, it was "postponed indefinitely" saying the film is "too important and the script is not ready, and it's too expensive to produce. It's back to the drawing board to see what is possible." Spielberg insisted the film is not dead and said, "We found that the film was costing a lot of money and I found a better way to tell the story more economically but also much more personally. I found the personal way into Robopocalypse, and so I just told everybody to go find other jobs, I’m starting on a new script and we’ll have this movie back on its feet soon.”

Some concept art by one of the talented artists has show up online by Patrick Janicke. Janicke is a professional conceptual illustrator who's worked on blockbuster films like Spider-Man (2002), Fantastic Four (2005) and Batman & Robin (1997)
